Go for something different…
For the most part, when you mention “Brazil” most people automatically think, Rio Di Janeiro or Sao Paulo. Despite the popularity, glitz and glamour that both of these places offer, sometimes, you just want to go for something different.
I was introduced to this city by some really nice people I met on a cruise. Not knowing what to expect, but after doing much research, I decided to take that plunge and booked my trip. Wouldn’t you know, it turned out to be the perfect vacation spot for me. A quaint little coastal city located on the shore of Sao Paulo. Full of character, it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Despite the fact that according to Wikipedia, this city has 27 beaches, it is not a huge touristy spot for Americans. It does; however, serve as a popular weekend spot for families from other parts of Brazil. This city is…Guarujá!
Besides not having to compete with an abundance of other tourist, one of the great things about visiting such a place is, you get the pleasure of spending quality time with the locals as they introduce you to some of the best non-touristy spots. We stood on cliffs and mountain sides as we overlooked the beautiful Asturias, Pitangueiras, and Enseada Beaches. We even shared a beer at a mountainside eatery overlooking the ocean with one of the locals.
Speaking of the locals, despite us not speaking Portuguese, we had no problems communicating. Most people did not hesitate to whip out their phones or share our translator to chat with us. Many, upon learning that we were Americans, wanted to take pictures with us. Despite the concerns that many people have, I literally felt like I was at “Cheers,” a place where everybody is welcomed, and they want to know your name.
Now, let’s talk food! As you would guess, visiting a coastal city, there was an abundance of fresh seafood to be had as well as some of the dishes and drinks that Brazil is known for. A few of my personal favorite spots were:
Panceta de porco
Dati Restaurante (datirestaurante.com.br) where we got the most amazing “Panceta Premium.” What we here in the Southern States call, “cracklin’.” Deep-fried pork seasoned and cooked to perfection.
Delores Bar & Restaurant(restaurantedonadolores.com.br). They offer rooftop dining. This is where I tried Brazil’s famous drink, a “Caipirinha.” Definitely, not a drink for the faint of heart.
Grilled Chicken
Praia Verde Restaurante, (restaurantguru.com.br) is literally located on the beach and was less than a 5-minute walk from where we stayed. The chicken was amazing
Cheeseburger
Projac Bar (https://www.facebook.com/projac.bar/) located in Pitangueiras is the place to go if you love cheeseburgers. I literally had the best cheeseburger I’ve ever eaten.; and
Shrimp
Tepisco Restaurant (https://www.facebook.com/tepiscoenseada/) where you definitely get your monies worth. While dining at either of these establishments, in addition to great food and drinks, you will also have the pleasure of listening to the sounds of Brazil from some very talented local artists.
The charming people and the simplistic way of living truly stole my heart. I also think I could get used to 70+ degree temperatures in the fall. All in all, from start to finish, the trip was amazing, and I am looking forward to returning.
There is a whole world out there waiting for you. So, the next time you’re planning a vacation, broaden those horizons, and go for something different. You might find that hidden treasure you’ve been looking for.
